The Farm!

 

John runs a small farm in North Carolina. 

One day, a man from the U.S. Department of Labor called John.  He said that his job was to enforce the Fair Labor Standards Act which sets basic minimum wage and overtime pay standards.  He claimed that John was not paying proper wages to his workers and that they were sending an agent out to interview him.

The agent showed up at the appointed time.  He introduced himself.

The agent was dressed in a black suit with a white shirt and a black tie.  John thought the man looked like an undertaker or that he was one of the Men In Black.

“I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,” demanded Mr. Ferguson.

“Well,”answered John, “There’s my farm hand.   He's been with me for 5 years. I pay him $700 a week and he also gets free room and board. There is also the cook who has been here for about 7 years, and I pay her $600 a week and she also gets free room and board.

There’s also the dim-wit. He works about 18 hours every day and he does about 80 percent of all the work around here. He makes about $20 per week, he pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of whiskey every Saturday night.”

“That’s the guy I want to talk to, the dim-wit,” says the agent.

“That would be me,” replied John.
